We had a wonderful meeting on Tuesday, November 27, at the MES cafeteria. We got a lot of information about the Title I program at MES as well as a terrific program presented by Mrs. Pape’s 5 th grade chorus!
(Please see the minutes below.)
For those of you with children at MES, the brochure fundraiser products should be going home on Tuesday, December 4. There was a mix-up in shipping at School Partners, beyond our control. We had hoped for everything to be in before Thanksgiving break and appreciate your patience.
Thank you for your continued involvement in the PTO and our schools.
From all of your PTO Officers,
Enjoy the break. Enjoy the time with your children,
Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for a Happy New Year!
Martin PTO Meeting Minutes
November 27, 2007
6:30 p.m. MES Cafeteria
President Sheri Spencer called the meeting to order at 6:30.
The officers present introduced themselves. Sheri thanked the parents and teachers for the success of the two fundraisers conducted so far this year. She also updated the recent participation of PTO at the MES Family Fun Night by donating popcorn balls to the dinner bags as well as providing Oxygenators for MES and MPS by procuring outside donations to cover the cost of these.
In Old Business, the minutes from the September meeting were read by Vice President Tina Kelly in Secretary Catherine Jones’ absence.
Sheri reminded parents to collect box tops, soup labels and Tyson labels to raise money for our schools.
In New Business, Treasurer Alicia Pinto gave the Treasurer report:
PTO fund has $2527.17
MPS Fund has $11,958.20 (fundraiser products paid for)
MES Fund has $22636.10 (fundraiser products not paid for)
MPS Cookie dough is still available for $6.00 a box, which is less than half price.
MPS Principal Athalia Donaldson was introduced by Sheri to give her report:
Connect Ed, the new communication tool is being used. Please be sure to listen to the message as it is used to communicate important information.
Mrs. Donaldson thanked everyone for the success of the cookie dough fundraiser with sales of over $31,000. The next fundraiser will be in January. In other MPS news, eye screening is continuing for K by Dr. Bynum and 2 nd graders by Dr. Donaldson. Dental screening will start on November 29. In closing, Mrs. Donaldson thanked the PTO for the oxygenator and wished everyone a nice Christmas break to enjoy your kids.
MES Principal Teresa Ross was introduced to present the MES Title I Meeting.
MES is considered Title I because almost 50% of our students receive free or reduced rate lunches. Title I resources are to help every child but to especially target those that need them most. Title I provides for one extra teacher, in the case of MES, Tina Brown is considered the Title I teacher. Title I encourages parental involvement. Please let MES or Ms. Ross know how they can better serve in this way better. They may have restraints that will make some things difficult, but they will try to work with you.
Title I provides teachers with The Master Teacher pamphlets to keep them current and give them high quality professional development. Currently there is the 3 rd grade reading initiative, which is overseen by Jane Hudgins. This will increase to include 4 th and 5 th grades eventually. Title I also provides parenting help in the form of pamphlets that will be available in the lobby for you to take.
Parents are the most important part of the Title I team. The last school report card was excellent thanks to teachers and parents with 3 A’s and 1 B in achievement and 3 A’s and 1 B (missed A by 1 point) in gains.
MES loves volunteers to share your vocation or to read to classes for example. Please remember to keep your teachers informed. Also, participate by joining PTO, coming to Parent teacher conferences,Family Fun night and school programs. MES has the play, The Elves and the Shoemaker, presented by the CLUE kids, in mid-December.
Ms. Ross reminded everyone to be sure that their contact information is current so that Connect Ed can reach everyone. This will be very important especially on snow days. Unfortunately, only one number can be assigned to each student.
In closing, Ms. Ross thanked everyone for making the MES fundraiser so successful with sales of about $22, 000 of which MES gets 50%. In addition, the school could use clothing to re-stock supply for when children have spills. etc. They need jeans, shirts and socks.
Sheri asked if there was any other new business. As there was none, she turned the meeting over to Mrs. Robin Pape, music teacher at MES, and her 5 th grade chorus. They presented several musical numbers, complete with dances, as well as a monologue by McKay Warren. Everyone in attendance helped the chorus by singing along on two numbers – Jingle Bell Rock and Holly Jolly Christmas.
Following the music, the meeting adjourned.
